Once a week, on Wednesday evening, a group of four students travelled to Flekke, accompanied by Erik to teach English to members of the local community. The level of participants’ English varied, from some who were very advanced already and only wished to brush up their English to those who had just a few words and little confidence in speaking.

By splitting into groups, we were able to tackle the different levels and a good time was had by all. Throughout the year we studied fairytales, newspapers, created the laws for a new society and read novels. We also ate quite a lot of cake, and got to know some of the local people from Flekke and the surrounding area, which is what really makes this EAC so rewarding. As fun as the teaching is, it’s the people that you get to meet that really made it something to look forward to each week.

We’ve stopped for Summer now, with everybody wanting to be outside and enjoying the (relatively) better weather, but already we’re making plans for next year and how this EAC can be expanded to allow more people to benefit and above all, have fun.

In this EAC we, a small group of UWC-students and the supervisor, offer English tutoring and teaching to adults in the Flekke area. The emphasis in on conversation and small interactive exercises but we also do some work on grammar and do some writing. All local people can join but some limited English knowledge and skills are required. The students in this EAC must be very excellent speakers of English and have sound understanding of English grammar. We had two successful terms last year.
