This term the Amnesty International group has been meeting every Monday at 16:00. We are a group of about twenty committed members, but the meetings have been open for everybody who wants to come. We have been focusing on investigations and presentations about places and case-studies where human rights are violated. For every meeting, two students have prepared a presentation about a certain issue, which has been followed up by debate. Topics we have discussed include death penalty, peace movements, the conflict in Burma and arm controls. It has been an interesting and informative experience and a good political forum to express one’s opinion.

On a few meetings, we have also had letter writing sessions open for the whole Fjaler community. On these sessions, we write letters to governments and politicians to show solidarity and hopefully make a change. Next term, we will try to do this more frequently. We are also planning on doing different activities to raise money for stamps and envelopes (at the current stage, each of us have to pay for our own letters).

Thanks to everybody who has been a part of the group!

Amnesty International (AI) deals with cases of human rights abuses across the globe by:

  • writing appeal letters, and
  • raising awareness about the issues.

At RCNUWC, we are part of an emergency response network in Norway and our activities include

  • preparing weekly presentations, followed by discussion, dedicated to the issue selected by presenters;
  • preparing letter writing workshops;
  • conducting “Letter Marathon”for cases suggested by AI;
  • informing the whole community about major areas of human rights violations – via the notice board in the Computer Room (A building); and
  • participating in joined workshops with AI members from Bergen.
