Overview

Welcome to the draft website for the Extra-Academic Programs (EAP)at RCNUWC.

The EAP at RCNUWC consists of regular weekly activities, special weeks & events, and informal activities.

1. Regular weekly activities:

  • Extra-Academic Commitments (EAC’s); and
  • Leirskule.

EAC’s are formally registered activities led by either staff members or by students with appropriate staff supervision and support. EAC’s cover the three aspects of CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) and the three Pillars of the College (Environmental, Humanitarian and Nordic) to various degrees. A student has at least one EAC at any given time but tends to have more than the minimum. A student should have a balanced program with respect to the above-mentioned six aspects over two years. For more information on current EACs at the College, please click on the EAC’s tab on the top of the website.

One of the largest programs at the College, the Red Cross Leirskule is a Camp School for Norwegian school children as well as groups from other countries. Although it is directed and administered by professional staff, College students are involved in almost every activity as leaders and instructors. Every student at the College gives one afternoon per week in Spring (term 2) and Autumn (term 3). Students lead activities for 12-year-old kids such as kayaking, archery, and mountain biking. For more information on Leirskule, please go to www.leirskule.no.

2. Special weeks:

  • Project Based Learning weeks (PBL’s);
  • Model United Nation (MUN);
  • First Aid Training; and
  • Friluftsveke / Reading Week.

Outside the regular weekly programs in Item 1 above, there are two weeks per year during which students participate in PBL’s. First-year students spend one of the two PBL’s to (1) learn about and hold a MUN simulation exercise and (2) undergo an intensive program of basic First Aid Training. First-year students also participate in one week of Nordic skiing during Friluftsveke, while second-year students use the week for reading.

To learn more about these special weeks, please click on Special Weeks on the top of this page.

3. Global Concerns

Global Concerns (GC) are conferences organized by the staff and students at the College. There are four GC conferences every two years, each addressing a particular significant global issue revolving around the following four broad themes:

  • Humanitarian
  • Environmental
  • Nordic
  • Other

GCs attempt to use guest speakers, workshops, projects, etc. to broaden and deepen the understanding of participants of a particular issue.

To learn more about these conferences, please click on Global Concerns on the top of this page.

4. Other:

In addition to the regular programs above, there are many special events plus informal activities at the College, organized by staff as well as students, to enrich campus life even further.

  • Special events are special because they do not occur regularly and tend to involve the entire College community.
  • The informal activities occur on a regular basis but have varying levels of involvements by students. Some examples are: fund-raising for earthquake victims, cross-country running, and cultural shows.

To learn more about the special events and some of the other informal activities organized by staff and students, please click on Other on the top of this page.
